These "Taurus" electric locomotives are something very typical of Austria. They are built by Siemens and they are based on Siemens' EuroSprinter family, but the stylish design is from the Italian design company Pininfarina. This one is a second generation Taurus of ÖBB's class 1116.

Austria is a mountainous country and rail transport is very effective and important there. The rail market was opened for private companies in 1998. The ex state monopoly, Austrian federal state railways, Österreichische Bundesbahn ÖBB still holds almost a monopoly in passenger traffic, but new competitors such as the Westbahn are emerging. Cargo traffic on the other hand has today a large number of operators, especially since a lot of cargo traffic rolls just through Austria from Italy to Germany, Slovenia to Germany or the other way round. Austria has rail connections to many of its neighbours. This means that with some luck one can see besides the Austrian also German, Swiss, Italian, Slovenian, Hungarian or Czech trains in Austria. Therefore there is a lot to show in this category of our archive - but please be patient, it takes time to publish all of them.
